Capstone Games: Ark Nova - Card Drafting, Hand Management Strategy Game, 1-4 Players, Ages 14+

In Ark Nova, you will plan and design a modern, scientifically managed zoo. With the ultimate goal of owning the most successful zoological establishment, you will build enclosures, accommodate animals, and support conservation projects all over the world. Specialists and unique buildings will help you in achieving this goal. Gathering diverse animals increases the attractiveness of your zoo, advancing you on the Appeal track and generating higher revenues. Likewise, careful stewardship of the animals allows you to support conservation projects, such as breeding programs, that leads to your advancement on the Conservation track and corresponding bonuses. These two tracks progress in opposite directions – if your counters meet, the game ends. Whoever achieves the best combination of appeal and conservation has built the most successful zoo and wins the game. Association work in different zoo associations allows you to partner with zoos and universities around the world. Together, with specialists and sponsors, they will help you manage the various tasks needed to achieve your goals. At the heart of Ark Nova are 255 cards featuring animals, specialists, unique enclosures, and conservation projects, each with a particular ability. Use them to increase the appeal and scientific reputation of your zoo and to collect conservation points. Each player has a set of five action cards to manage their gameplay, and the power of an action is determined by the slot the card currently occupies.

Fantastic Game for Gamers
by Mark
If you're a gamer, this game is for you. My favorite things about it are how the things you know (how animals belong to continents, how zoos participate in conservation, how animals need enclosures and wouldn't always be able to share with other animals, how some animals need water, etc) are reflected mechanically in very elegant ways. There are so few fiddly bits here -- so few exceptions to rules or weird gotchas. It's fantastic. So much replayability due primarily to the large deck, but also because of the maps and varying goals. The only possible complaint is the time, but even though it's a 3 hour game and I usually prefer my games to be about 60-90 minutes, I've played this multiple times and lost track of time *every* time. You're engaged the whole time and rarely just waiting on someone else's turn.
